Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, has launched Computer Science Week 2024, which is set to take place from 20 – 27 April.

Events set to take place during Computer Science Week 2024 will focus on the opportunities Computer Science offers all students, with developments happening in the area in schools and classrooms and through collaboration with industry across Ireland.

Computer Science Week is organised by Oide, the national support service for teachers and school leaders, with the support of the Department of Education.

Minister Foley said:
“Since its introduction as a curriculum subject for Leaving Certificate in 2018, Computer Science has been growing steadily in popularity. Studying the subject supports students to improve their design and problem-solving skills, which can be of immense benefit to them throughout their studies and in their future lives."

Currently, over 200 post-primary schools throughout the country offer the subject as part of their Senior Cycle curriculum and around 3,000 students are preparing to sit this year’s Leaving Certificate Computer Science examination.

As part of Computer Science Week 2024, there will be an ambitious programme of events for primary and post-primary pupils and students that will provide opportunities to explore the subject first-hand through online and live workshops, information webinars and more.

Minister Foley said that Computer Science Week 2024 will shine a light on Computer Science education in our primary and post-primary schools.

"This week will help in a very visible way to create an awareness among students, parents, teachers, guidance counsellors and school leaders on the many opportunities which studying Computer Science can present. I hope everyone enjoys the week and all it has to offer.”

Minister Foley thanked the school communities for pioneering Computer Science education, the industry partners who so readily share their expertise and enthusiasm with students considering studying the subject and the higher education institutions around the country supporting Computer Science Week 2024.

More information and a full timetable of events will be published through the Oide Computer Science X/twitter account - @Oide_CompSci
