re : just moved to macroom           07/06/2009 21:50 - Ask Mother Hen ----------------------------------- Hi there,
Are you looking for a school place for September? The secondary school year has finished for this academic year which is probably why phones are ringing out!
If your child has finished GCSEs (age 16 presumably?) then they will be looking to join a secondary school for senior cycle which can be 2 or 3 years depending on whether or not the school offers a Transition Year. Contact the Department for Education and Science www.education.ie who may be able to advise regarding securing a school place for September.
Be aware that there are significant differences between Key Stage 5 studies (AS/A level) in England and the equivalent over here. Students are required to take usually seven subjects for the Leaving Cert as opposed to 3 for A-level and there are fewer options as English, Irish , Maths and usually a foreign language are compulsory. Most subjects are examined at the end of the 6th year, there are no resits or modular components as there are with AS/A levels.
Best of luck with your move, Macroom is a lovely part of the world
re : just moved to macroom           11/07/2010 21:34 - Ask Mother Hen ----------------------------------- how did ya move go to macroom?
re... : just moved to macroom           11/06/2009 21:35 - Ask Mother Hen ----------------------------------- I would avoid Transition Year also if I could.
re... : just moved to macroom           09/06/2009 12:15 - Ask Mother Hen ----------------------------------- I would be inclined to opt to go straight into 5th year and avoid transition year as that is adding an extra tear, which on age grounds, he doesn´t need.
