Hi, my 7yr old son was diagnosed with SLI (specific Language Impairment) and im looking into schools for him which has smaller class sizes or where he can get the resourses he needs. We live in Bahrain where the schools are very acadamic so i feel the best thing is to move back. I have been told by the Speech Therepist who assessed him in Ireland that he is to old for the Junior Language Unit and there may be no space for him for the Senior Language Unit next year in Limerick. I will move anywhere to get him into the right school and the support he needs. any advise welcome. Carol

What about a Language School i.e one where the emphasis is on communication/language in language rich environment? Chatterbox is based in Leopardstown and there are two Speech & Language specialists and a Behaviour specialist there. Some kids have speech delay, some have ASD. Staff trained in lamh, pecs too.

There is an excellent Deaf school, St.Joseph´s School for the Deaf Boys and it is on the Navan Road. Please do go there and see for yourself. You will be amazed with the environment there. Good luck. Dee

I would say call the ncse - national council for special education and see can they help you regarding this as they may suggest schools which can help you...
hope that they can assist you in some way
we had worries also when we were getting a school for our Son, but in the end it all worked out, I´m sure that someone will help you in the ncse....

If he reaches a teenage years, you can try to send him to a special needs schools which educate children with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), blindness and deafness. Therapeutic boarding schools and special needs schools are equipped with the necessary facilities and trained specialists to encourage the children´s academic development

Hi All, Im concerned about my nephew. He is 4 yrs old and due to start primary school in Sept. He has gone through lots of assessments but cant be diagnoised for verbal dsypraxia until he is 6 but was told he has very mild autism. His understanding of everything is brill and is getting on good with LAMH signing. He has been getting private S/L since he was 2 1/2yrs old. Sounds come out but no words and S/L would be his no.1. If he goes to mainstream he will get a SNA but no S/L. Can anyone help. Any school you know that would suit him or any info that would help him I would be most gratful. thanks, Olly.

I would be really interested in hearing what decision was arrived at and how your nephew is doing? Hope he has settled. I know a neighbour´s little boy who didn´t speak until he was 6.
