SINGLE PARENTS TEENAGE BOY NEEDS MALE MENTOR/ROLL MODEL           07/10/2009 13:38 - Ask Mother Hen (Locality: Dublin South) ----------------------------------- HI THERE, IM A SINGLE PARENT OF A 14YR OLD BOY WHOM IS GOING THROUGH TYPICAL TEENAGE CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR. HE HAS NO MALE ROLE MODEL OR MENTOR FOR GOOD EXAMPLE. IN AMERICA THEY HAVE A BUDDY SCHEME FOR TEENAGERS TO BEFRIEND AND LOOK UP TO. IS THERE ANY SUCH A SCHEME HERE OR DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS. IVE MENTIONED MY SITUATION TO OTHER FAMILIES IN THE HOPE THEY MIGHT INCLUDE MY SON IN ´DADDY ACTIVITIES´. THEY INFORM ME THEIR SONS NO LONGER WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN ´DAD´ STUFF AND HAVE MOVED ON AT 14YRS.

I was watching a programme on the TV not so long ago about a similar buddy system in Ireland. I googled it for you and this is what I found out. Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) is a mentoring programme that matches a young person (10-18 years) to an adult volunteer (18+). Their website is www.bbbsireland.ie Don´t know much else about it but it might be worth checking out.
