If the child worked hard, regardless of the result, then in this day and age, the meal and perhaps a little gift of their choice would be appropriate. Wouldn´t go over the top though.

We´re going to i.e. meal but I wondered what is the norm. Grannys and couple neighbours have given him cards and a bit of cash. My son did do very well and he did really work hard!
