Hi Yvonne
I know from my sons communion that the godparents were invited along and they went up with our son during a specific part of the ceremony to ´present´ him. I think it is the norm to invite the godparents to participate in this way but to be honest if the godparents can´t make it a parent or grandparent can undertake the role.
