Safety - dropping off to school

Ann,

Thanks for the reply. The school policy is that the school opens at 8.50am - and that is when they take up their responsibility for the children. However the reality is that in todays world, most parents are working and are caught trying to make work with traffic etc., and drop off earlier, a bus service also drops off earlier, and although many times a teacher may be present before they officially start work, its not good enough to assume someone is looking after the welfare of your child. And you are right there is a potential of strangers targeting the school, this is what has brought the issue to the fore as someone suspicious was seen in the vicinity - The yard supervisor might be the way forward ....i will check re the insurance company etc....if there are any other ideas out there...please reply...

at our school one of the school buses arrives 10 minutes before the school officially opens. to date this matter has been largely ignored by the school. the children tend to play in the school yard or huddle at the school door if its raining. has anyone else had this problem and if so have you any solutions?

Check the school policy, when we were redrafting our policy this was one area that needed clarification following a child being injured in the playground about 20mins before the official school time. The policy should state what time the gate is opened to accept students and from this time they are the responsibility of the school, before that they are the responsibility of the parents. A lollipop lady would not be paid to supervise the children her responsibilities relate to crossing the roads safely. Maybe a yard supervisor could be employed, if it could be done through the P.A. then their insurance might cover it. Our school only takes responsibility for children 10 mins before school opens and I think this is very fair, some parents were dropping their children on their way to work, not only were they at risk of being injured but of strangers hanging around the area too!

It really does need to be resolved before something happens. Good luck with it.

Just thought, what about starting a breakfast club? This could be organised and run by parents, which would keep costs low or at a higher cost a group could be employed to run it. Might be worth considering, depending on the number of children in the school some fundraising could be done to pay for it and all children could be invited to join in.

Hi - we have a situation at our school which im sure is like many around the country. Parents are dropping off from 8.25am onwards but school is only open at 8.50am. Effectively children are unsupervised until this time. Parents want to get together to resolve this gap in security. If any other schools have faced this problem and come up with solutions, i.e. pay a "Lollipop Lady" to supervise the gate area for the 40mins etc, it would be great to hear from you. Many thanks....
