In the school in Glanmire, I would imagine that the children are more confined than they might be in some of the colleges in rural areas - maybe I´m wrong. I just remember going to the Gaeltacht myself when I was 14 and we seem to have had huge freedom. Different times, I suppose.

My son went at the end of 6th class to Colaiste Uisce in Mayo .. he absolutely loved it and he was only 11years old... they learn Irish doing water sports and other activities .. I was very impressed with the level of Irish he came back with. would definitely send him again and would recommend it highly. there is also scholarships available and money off offers.

hope this helps
Debbie

I am thinking of sending my son to the Gaeltacht next summer (if I can afford it by then). He is in 6th class now so I am wondering if he is too young or whether there is a Gaeltacht that would be more suitable for him?

Not sure how much Irish is actually learned on these courses. They are quite expensive too. It´s more about the social interaction and the fact that children are learning the independence of being away from their parents, often for the first time.

One of the other issues with the Gaeltacht is the price. It´s not cheap!

How young is too young for the Gaeltacht? I would feel it depends on the child and whether he/she has a friend with him/her. Also, the further away from home, the harder it would be, I would have thought.

Scoil na nÓg in Glanmire run three-week summer courses or the 10-14 age group:

Colaiste na bFhiann run an excellent 3 week residential irish summer college for 4th/5th/6th class students. they stay in our ladys bower boarding school in athlone. Does wonders for their Irish but it realy depends on whether you think your own child is ready to go - kids ability to cope from being away from home varies hugely at that age. My child went in 6th class and loved it - went to irish college again the following year. Irish summer colleges book out early so you need to make enquiries now. see following link for colaiste na bhfiann

Some of the courses really do improve the Irish - I can recommend colaiste na bhfiann also as I sent my child there - she loved it and will go back for her third time next summer. If it´s your childs first time away from home then as coleary says, it can be more about the social interaction and learning independence and it might be easier on the child to go somewhere like Uisce which is a little less strict on the Irish and also has the water activities. Eitherway, they are all quite expensive. They also book up early, particularly for June when the secondary schools are off. You need to be booking now for next summer!

Given his age, it might be worth considering an Irish summer school where he could come home at weekends. You never know until they go as to how they´ll feel. More often than not, they can be a bit lonely in the beginning (sometimes all the way through) but usually don´t want to come home in the end, leaving all their new friends.

One of the difficulties with some of the Gaeltachts is the type of Irish that is spoken. For those who speak Munster Irish, going to a Gaeltacht in the West can be a bit confusing and vice versa.
