Doing too much

Hi Homebird,
I reckon if your child is happy doing all the extra curricular stuff that´s fine. She´s obviously enjoying it. The only point I´d make is that to ensure she gets in some normal playtime with her friends. Play is just as important to young kids as academic learning etc. I suppose we all ask ourselves if we are ´hothousing´ our kids too much these days and probably the best way of judging this is talking to our kids and see how they feel about it. If these extra activities are stimulating her and she is socialising with other kids of her age and her academic work is not suffering then I´d say ´keep it up´.

My 8 yr old daughter seems to want to do an awful lot of extra activities this year. She is already enrolled for piano, gymnastics and drama which she did last year. She is asking to also be allowed do hip hop dance and tennis. In fairness she is great at doing her homework and has enough energy to fit them all in but I wonder would it all be too much. On the other hand if she enjoys them all and as they are local it´s no great hassle for me to bring her, why not? Any thoughts anyone?

I think its certainly possible that some kids are doing far too much these days. Children need to learn how to just ´be´, to be allowed time to play on their own, not constantly busy. Sometimes I think kids are doing these extra activities because its what parents want or need but not necessarily best for the child.

Not sure why you don´t count swimming Fred as it still means another run around. Glad to hear I´m not the only mad parent with their kids doing too much. I don´t mind once the activities are relatively close by or better still, held in the school

I agree. We have decided to cut down a little on the activities this year. I think it is important that they are going to activities that they genuinely enjoy rather than forcing them to do things just so they are busy. It is nice for them to have some free time in order that they can have friends over and have some chill out time after school and homework.

Mine also seem to be doing a lot, 5 activities each, but 1 is swimming which we don´t count. We also try to arrange play dates but as we don´t live in a housing estate it´s not possible for the kids to just go out and play. They are both very happy though and don´t want to give up anthing.
