An online education community called iScoil provide an alternative learning route for pupils who struggle with traditional learning and for whom attending school is near impossible.

This accredited and certified digital learning platform is aimed at 13-16 year old students and is, according to its founders (The Presentation Sisters), developed as a unique, non-judgmental programme that is tailored to pupils’ individual needs.

Originally set up in 2011 as a pilot scheme, the e-learning facility has already accredited 335 students with FETAC level certificates and it aims to provide many more.

According to their site, the system aims to captivate students who have previously become disengaged for whatever reason with schooling, and have become outsiders in the education system.

How It Works

Students between the ages of 13 - 16 years can be referred to iScoil once they have been out of mainstream education for a minimum of 6 monts although there can be a waiting list for the programme. Referrals usually come through TUSLA Education Welfare Officers.

All students take four core modules: communications; maths; personal and interpersonal skills; and computer literacy. They then complete two other modules chosen from career preparation, personal effectiveness and digital media. According to the site, an individual learning program plan is created. iScoil state:

“We build a personalised learning plan on our system that is designed to bring out the best of the student’s abilities and be reflective of their interests. Each day the student completes work from this learning plan and online tutors and mentors review the work, provide feedback and adapt the next day’s learning plan as required.”

Students can log in to iScoil when it suits their timetable and can either learn at home or go to one of the dedicated learning centres provided by local youth agencies.
