Budget 2021 Education Update

The education budget across primary, secondary and third-level is set to climb above €11 billion, the highest ever on record.

This will include:

  • An additional €2bn to support children with special education needs including around 400 extra special-educational-needs teachers and
  • an additional 990 SNA posts.
  • An additional 300 primary teaching posts plus a further 265 posts across post primary to cater for growing enrolments
  • Reduction in primary pupil teacher ratio by one point to 25:1 by providing over 300 mainstream teaching posts
  • €80m is being provided to support school building programmes, ICT and minor works schemes
  • Additonal funding for teacher education to address shortage of Post-primary teachers in Maths, Physics & Spanish
  • 145 School Building projects to be delivered
  • The Hot School Meals scheme is also set to receive an additional €5m in the budget.
  • Funding allocated for 80 occupational, behavioural and speech and language therapists.

    Third Level

  • Every full-time third level student to receive €250 state payment
  • Fee grants for post-graduate students to increase for €2,000 to €3,500 in September 2021 & Fee income threshold to qualify for grants to rise from €31,500 to €54,240
  • An additional €1.5 Million for the 1916 Bursary Fund
  • Additional College spaces created this year will be retained and an additional 2,700 will also be created in 2021
  • Additional €8 million for the State training and further education agency Solas
  • A €3,000 incentive for employers to take on apprentices extended to end of June.
