Team HOPE Launches 2017 Shoebox Appeal

Lottie Ryan was in Dublin today to officially launch the annual Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal. The 2FM presenter joined Team Hope to encourage families, friends, schools, community groups and businesses across Ireland to ‘GET PACKING’ and share the gift of hope with needy children by donating a gift-filled shoebox by 10th November.

After smashing all expectations to deliver more than 250,000 shoeboxes to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union last year, the bar is being raised again in 2017. Team Hope is asking people to double their own impact this year by encouraging their friends, family members or colleagues to get involved and ensure that even more children experience the joy of receiving a gift. Every shoebox counts, because every child counts and for these children (whose families typically live on less than €1 a day) this gift from Ireland may be the only present they will receive this Christmas.

To fill as many boxes as possible, why not team up with your friends, family and colleagues to throw a ‘Packing Party’, where everyone takes responsibility for collecting a number of items and brings them all together at your packing party; then donate your shoeboxes before the deadline of the 10th November. In the receiving country Team Hope’s network of partners will deliver the shoebox gifts right into a child’s hands – in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres or family homes.

Speaking at the launch, Lottie Ryan said:
“My family and I have participated in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal so many times. I remember filling shoeboxes when I was in school every year, so it's a cause that I'm familiar with and is close to my heart. It’s a fun and easy way to give back and this year, I am thrilled to be a part of Team Hope’s mission and to raise awareness for this fantastic cause. Particularly at this time of year, it's incredibly important to help those less fortunate. There’s really no better gift you can give.”

Getting involved with Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal is simple. All you have to do is find an empty shoebox, wrap it in Christmas paper and fill it with gifts for a boy or girl aged between 2 and 14, attach €4 and bring it to a local drop off point before Friday, November 10th

When considering items that are best to gift, think of the 4W’s:

  • Write – pen, pencil, copybook, paper, colouring book, felt pens, sharpener, eraser, solar calculator (these children have no access to batteries).

  • Wash – toothbrush and toothpaste, soap (wrapped), facecloth, hairbrush, comb.

  • Wear – a hat, scarf, gloves, socks or underwear.

  • Wow – sunglasses, games, small Irish gift, a photo of yourself, sweets (must be in date until at least April 2018), make up, a small musical instrument, toys like a doll, a car, cuddly toy, skipping rope, yo-yo or finger puppet.

There are 400 drop off points nationwide, including all Axa, FastFit/FirstStop branches and Toymaster stores. To find your nearest drop-off point visit the HOPE website here.
